Assignment 2: A Comparative Case Study: The British Isles and Beyond (3,000 word project) Provide a critical analysis of how your chosen debate or theory is relevant to two different cities, using one city within the British Isles and one international case. Remember, when you select your two cities: • One city MUST be in the British Isles; • One city MUST be an international example (excluding the British Isles). Think about Asia, Africa, North/South America, Australia or elsewhere in Europe. The structure of your project MUST include: • Title

• Abstract (~200 words but NOT included in the word count) Your abstract provides a summary of the essay which includes the theory which you are applying, the cities you have selected to illustrate the theory, how you analyse the relevance of your theory to the cities, and what the findings are.

• Introduction (~250 words)

• Theoretical Background ( ~200 words) Provide a brief overview of the key theory, concept or debate which you will apply to your case study cities.

• Case Study Selection (~ 300 words) In this section, identify your two case study sites and critically reflect on your rationale for selecting these cities. You might want to consider one city with which you are personally familiar, as well as cities you have learned about through you’re the course or your research.

• Case Study One (~ 650 words) Include relevant historical and policy background. Use academic and other sources to critically examine the ways in which the case study site is relevant to your chosen theory, concept or debate. How have different researchers, government bodies and organisations used research evidence to understand or change what is happening in the city? Remember, it is also important to include counter-evidence and areas of dispute. Illustrate your project with images, maps and other figures as appropriate.

• Case Study Two (~ 650 words) Include relevant historical and policy background.

• Discussion (Case Comparison) (~ 500 words) Compare and contrast your findings in relation to both case study sites. How does your selected theory, concept or debate illuminate or obscure our understanding of experiencing city life in the case studies chosen?

• Conclusion (~250 words) • References (Not included in the word count) Ensure that you include academic journal articles. Additionally, you may draw on academic books, government policy documents, third sector reports, statistical data, journalistic or other sources. However, high quality peer reviewed research must be a central resource.
